True to form, 'Cat and Dog' represents classic Peter Blake imagery, showing his love for the ephemera of modern times, tattoos, illustration, and folklore. Following his establishment in the 1960s as a leading name in the British Pop Art movement, in the early 1970s, he left London for the rural countryside of Bath to originate the 'Brotherhood of Ruralists'. Here, he began painting landscapes to counteract the impulse of social commentary in art and the abstraction of the avant-garde. He moved back to London in 1979, returning to his old ways— melding popular culture with fine art.
Created in 2014, this piece represents a fantastic blend of both of these periods.
