Signature does not create authenticity
Both signed and unsigned Banksy prints can be legitimate editions. The crucial question is whether the work corresponds to the recorded edition and is supported by Pest Control authentication. A signature may affect scarcity and market demand, but it cannot repair weak provenance or replace examination of the object and its documentation.
Compare the correct category
Prices should be compared signed with signed and unsigned with unsigned, while also accounting for colourway, edition, condition and provenance. Check whether the signature is where it should be for that edition and whether numbering, dimensions and paper agree with recognised information. An online description using the word ‘signed’ should never be accepted without clear photographs and documentation.

Unsigned does not mean unofficial. Banksy issued substantial unsigned editions alongside smaller signed ones, and both categories can be authenticated by Pest Control. The useful comparison is therefore like with like: the same image, edition type, colourway and condition. A signature affects scarcity and price, but the certificate, edition details and physical state of the sheet remain indispensable.
Why both categories exist
Banksy released authorised prints in both signed and unsigned formats. In many cases the unsigned edition is larger, while the signed edition is scarcer, but the exact structure varies by image and should always be checked individually. “Unsigned” describes the absence of the artist’s signature; it does not mean unnumbered, unauthorised or inherently inferior.
This distinction is important because newcomers often assume that any unsigned work must be a reproduction. That is incorrect. An authorised unsigned screenprint can be a genuine editioned Banksy work, provided the object, edition details and Pest Control documentation correspond.
How signature can affect the market
Signed examples often command a premium because fewer are available and some collectors prefer a visible signature. The size of that premium is not constant. It depends on the image, edition sizes, colourway, condition, provenance and current demand. A famous unsigned image in excellent condition may be more desirable than a compromised signed example of a less sought-after work.
Price comparisons therefore need discipline. Compare the same title with the same signature status and edition type, then account for condition and documentation. Auction headlines can be misleading if they refer to a different category or to an exceptional example.

Heavy Weaponry is a useful reminder that familiar Banksy imagery can exist in more than one material form. The work illustrated here is an edition on canvas, not a paper screenprint. A listing should therefore state the support clearly rather than relying on the image or artist name to do the work. Medium, dimensions, edition information and authentication must describe the object actually being sold.
A practical buying checklist
Ask for clear images of the front and reverse, the edition number, signature where applicable and the Pest Control certificate. Confirm that the title, dimensions and identifying details on the documentation match the artwork. Request a condition report that addresses fading, creasing, surface marks, restoration and framing or mounting history.
Also establish provenance and invoice language. The invoice should identify the exact work and signature status rather than simply saying “Banksy print”. If the seller is using a separate certificate, understand who issued it; a dealer-created certificate is not a substitute for Pest Control authentication.
Choosing between signed and unsigned
The decision is ultimately about budget, scarcity and the particular image. Collectors seeking the rarest format may favour signed examples. Others may prefer to allocate the same budget to a stronger image or a better-condition unsigned work. Neither choice should bypass object-level due diligence.
A disciplined purchase begins with the work itself: exact edition, support, colourway, condition and documentation. Signature is one attribute within that assessment, not a shortcut around it.
Do not confuse three different inscriptions
A hand-applied artist's signature, an edition number and a printed signature within an image are separate features. A work can have one without the others. The description should identify exactly what is present and how it relates to the documented publication. The word unsigned should not be used as shorthand for a work whose entire edition history has not been researched.
Ask for photographs that connect the inscriptions with the complete sheet rather than supplying isolated close-ups alone. The title, medium, dimensions and documentation should form a consistent account. If a seller describes a later addition or an unusual signing arrangement, that claim needs evidence specific to the object; it should not be inferred from the appearance of the handwriting.
Condition can outweigh an initial preference
A collector may begin with a preference for a signed example but find that the available impression has fading or mounting issues that change the decision. Another may prefer an unsigned edition because the image and condition are a better fit. These are object-level judgements, not universal rules about which category is superior.
Make a shortlist that records the same information for each candidate and marks missing details clearly. Compare the actual offer, including documentation, framing and delivery arrangements. A signature premium should not distract from a report that has not yet addressed the reverse or concealed margins.
Verify the current procedure independently

The most useful final question is whether you can describe the object accurately without relying on the signature to do all the explanatory work. If the answer includes a clear edition identity, support, condition history and documentation, the comparison has a sounder basis.
