Gerhard Richter
Gerhard Richter is a German painter known for his diverse practice that spans photorealism, abstraction, and conceptual work. Born in Dresden in 1932, he studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts and later at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf after fleeing East Germany in 1961. Richter gained recognition in the 1960s for his blurred photo-based paintings, and later for his abstract works created through layered squeegee techniques. His art explores memory, perception, and the nature of representation, often shifting between realism and abstraction. Widely regarded as one of the most important contemporary artists, his work is held in major collections worldwide.
