Yoshitomo Nara is one of the most recognisable and influential contemporary artists working today. Best known for his portraits of wide-eyed children, solitary figures and expressive animals, Nara creates images that appear innocent at first glance but often carry a deeper sense of rebellion, vulnerability and emotional tension.

Born in Hirosaki, Japan, in 1959, Nara developed his distinctive visual language through a combination of childhood memory, music, literature, popular culture and art history. His subjects frequently appear alone, occupying quiet and simplified spaces. Their expressions range from contemplative and melancholic to defiant and mischievous, giving each figure a strong sense of individuality and psychological depth.
